How to sign up and sign in

NearbySpy uses one sign-in page for everyone, Clients and Investigators alike. From that page you can create a new account or sign back into an existing one. Whichever path you take, your sign-in is protected by a Supabase-managed session stored in an httpOnly cookie that browser JavaScript cannot read.
Creating a new account
- Open the sign-in page and choose Sign up.
- Enter the email address you want associated with the account. This becomes your login and the address we use for verification, password resets, and Case-related notifications.
- Pick a password that meets the rules in Password rules and keeping your account secure, or sign up with Google. See Signing in with Google.
- Confirm your email if prompted. Some flows require email confirmation before you can access your dashboard.
If you accepted a Case invitation by email, the invite link routes you through the same sign-in page and attaches you to the Case automatically once you authenticate. See Accepting a Case invitation.
Signing back in
- Open the sign-in page.
- Enter the email and password you originally used, or click Continue with Google if that is how you signed up.
- You will land on the dashboard that matches your account type. Why you land where you land is explained in Why you land on Client vs Investigator dashboard.
If you forget your password
Use the Forgot password link on the sign-in page. We email you a single-use reset link. The link expires quickly on purpose. If it expires before you click it, request a new one. Old links stop working immediately, so do not worry about a stale email being a security risk.
Common sign-in problems
- "Email not found". You may have signed up with Google originally. Try Continue with Google using the same address.
- Stuck on the sign-in screen after entering credentials. Clear your browser's cookies for the NearbySpy domain and try again. Cookies are how the session is held.
- Reset email never arrived. Check spam first, then try again. If a teammate forwarded the reset email, the link only works for the original recipient.
- Two accounts on one email. This should not happen, but if it does, contact support so we can merge them safely without losing Case history.
One account per person
Do not sign up multiple times with different emails to "test" the platform. Cases, Evidence, and audit trails are tied to your user identity. Splitting yourself across accounts breaks visibility, breaks billing, and creates confusing Case histories. If you genuinely need a separate workspace (for example, a personal account and an agency account), contact support so we can set it up cleanly.

Password rules and keeping your account secure
Your NearbySpy account holds Case data, Evidence, Client communications, and in some cases billing details. The password rules below are the minimum we enforce. Meeting the minimum is fine, but on a real PI workload you should aim higher.
Phone verification and OTP troubleshooting
Some flows on NearbySpy use a one-time password (OTP) sent by SMS to a phone number you control. The most common are verifying a phone number on an Investigator profile during onboarding, and verifying ownership when claiming an imported listing.
Signing in with Google
You can sign up or sign in to NearbySpy with a Google account by clicking Continue with Google on the sign-in page. Google handles the password and we never see it. We receive only your verified email address, your name, and your profile photo from Google.
