The one-time code
During the claim, NearbySpy sends a short numeric code to a method tied to the listing. This is usually:
- A phone number associated with the firm, by SMS or voice call.
- A business email address that matches the listing's domain.
The code is short-lived. Enter it within a few minutes. If you do not receive a code, check that the contact details on file are still in use. If they are out of date, the code can be sent to a new method only after a verification document confirms ownership. Verification documents
For listings where the OTP method is unreliable, or where the listing is high value, NearbySpy may request additional proof. A verification document is one of:
- Your active Private Investigator license, in the name of the firm or principal.
- A government business registration that shows you as owner or officer.
- Other formal documentation that ties you to the listed firm.
Upload the document through the secure step in the claim flow. The file is reviewed by NearbySpy staff. It is not displayed publicly and is not shared with other Investigators.
Why two methods
The OTP confirms control of a phone or email. A document confirms identity and ownership. Together they give a high-confidence answer to the question of whether the person claiming the listing is the right person to manage it.
Common reasons a claim is rejected
- The OTP was not entered in time. Restart the claim and request a new code.
- The verification document does not match the listed firm name. Use a document that names you and the firm together.
- The license is expired. Use a current, active license.
- The document is unreadable. Re-upload a clear scan or photo.
How long verification takes
OTP verification is usually instant. Document review typically completes within one to two business days. If you have not heard back after that window, contact support. See Contact form reasons and what to include.
What changes after verification
The listing becomes a fully editable profile under your control. You can update services, photos, credentials, and contact methods. Privacy of uploaded documents
